Duplicate this page before you start, and write your answers in your own copy.
📱 1. What does your feed look like?
Open the social media app you use most (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or whatever it is) and scroll through your feed for about two minutes.
✍️ Write here, as you scroll.
-
What topics appear most often?
-
What perspectives or viewpoints are represented? Think about politics, culture, age group and interests.
-
What is missing? What topics, viewpoints or kinds of people do you almost never see?
-
Who decided this is what you should see: you, or something else?
🔍 2. The filter bubble experiment
Part A: Search comparison
Work with the person next to you. You will both search for exactly the same term at the same time on your phones, using mobile data rather than the school WiFi, in the browser where you are normally logged in.
Search term: your teacher will give you this.
✍️ Write here.
-
Compare your first page of results side by side. What is the same? What is different?
-
If your results differ, why might that be? What does the algorithm "know" about each of you?
-
If your results are similar, what might that tell you?
Part B: Social media comparison
Now both search for the same term on TikTok, Instagram or YouTube, using the same platform as each other.
