Before you start. The first task sends you to an online test: six pages of political statements. Some are blunt, and a few touch on things people hold strongly: religion, race, sexuality, punishment, drugs. The site does not record your answers and nobody in this room will see them. Later we put the whole class onto a single chart with no names on it. Section 2 explains how, including how to keep your own result off the chart without anybody noticing.

🧭 1. Six pages of statements

Work through the test on your own. Do not talk while you do it, and do not look at anybody else's screen.

The statements run across six pages. You cannot skip one and there is no "don't know" option. You get four choices, from strongly disagree to strongly agree, and you have to take the nearest.

Do not overthink them. Read, react, move on. If you catch yourself constructing an argument, you have spent too long on it.

At the end you will be given two numbers and a chart. Write the two numbers down and stop there.

✍️ Write here, on your own.

  1. Write down your two numbers, exactly as the site gave them to you.

  2. Copy out one statement where none of the four answers fitted what you actually think.

  3. Why did none of them fit?

  4. Copy out one statement you answered straight away, without stopping to think.

  5. Why was that one so easy?

📍 2. The room

Your two numbers are going onto one chart with everybody else's. You will be able to see the shape of this class. You will not be able to see who is where.

📊 Putting the class on one chart.

  1. Write your two numbers on a slip of paper: the economic score first, then the social score. Do not put your name on it.
  2. Fold the slip in half and put it in the pile at the front.
